Gas Works Bridge, Sowerby Bridge

Caption :- Erected in 1816 this is the earliest cast iron bridge in West Yorkshire still in existence. The bridgecomprises of four ribs at three foot centres, and spans the River Calder in a single arch of 92ft (28.04m) with a rise of 9.2ft (2.8m). The iron work for the bridge was cast at Shelf Iron Works by Aydon and Elwell. Much of the original bridge structure is now obscured by strengthening works undertaken in the 1920's. This view of January 2017 shows the open spandrels of the cast iron ribs.
