Whetley Hill Reservoir

Description and History of Site:-
Built 1845 as part of the first phase of the Bradford Water Works project which included the compensation reservoir at Hewenden (WYK02366), the abstraction of water at Manywells (WYK02359) and the transport of the water via the Manywells aqueduct (WYK02387) to this service reservoir, via the Chellow Dean (WYK02388) storage reservoir. From here, the water was distributed to the town. The contractors were Smith and Chapman of Herne Bay, Kent, and from newspaper accounts of the time this element of the works was the most efficiently and promptly executed (though it was the first contract let, in February 1844). Built on a site adjacent to the 'Old Globe' inn, it was sometimes referred to as the Globe reservoir.

Uncovered for most of its working life, the reservoir was probably reconstructed in reinforced concrete and covered in the 1960's. It went out of use in the 1990's and the site is still (2019) awaiting redevelopment.
