Description and History of Site:-
Site cleared, landscaped and partly re-developed. Two shafts sunk circa 1862 into the Beeston and Black Bed seams; the deeper shaft 288 yards. Owned and operated by Lockwood & Elliott, of Grange Moor. Output around 70,000 tons annually primarily coal for household use and steam raising. After nationalisation in 1947, output also used for coking and gas production. Employment peaked in the 1940's with around 270 underground and 40 surface employees. Closed 1973.
Horizontal twin winding engine by Bradley and Craven of Wakefield, 1930, possibly the last engine built by them.
