St Helen's Works

Description and History of Site:-
Originally a water powered woollen mill, built between 1820 and 1830. Rebuilt and extended by 1890 as a steam powered leather, glue and gelatine works. The works had been occupied by George Pitt & Co., who went out of business in 1894. By the 1940's, operated by Ross (Gelatines) Ltd. This company seems to have been dissolved in 1977 after which it is presumed the works went out of use and were subsequently demolished. The weir was removed in 2015, having fallen into a state of disrepair.
