Eastburn Quarry

Description and History of Site:-
It is a large and deep quarry hole, water filled in its lower part, with vertical working faces to the east, north and south and a massive judd wall on the west side formed of huge sandstone blocks. Given the unknown depth of the water it is impossible to estimate the full depth of the quarry but visible faces exceed 20m. Outside the flooded area there are embayments within the earlier parts of the quarry two of which have low judd walls, and there is a cart track leading downhill from the quarry with its west side retained by a judd wall: the track enters the quarry through a rock-cut passage. On the south-east side of the quarry, above the highest working face, are remains of a crane base with large concrete blocks and iron fixing bolts. No other infrastructure has survived, though it did have steam cranes within the quarry. and A-frame cranes above the quarry hole for loading the wagons It is known to have been in use in the later 19th century but no details have been found. In 1914 it changed ownership and then specialised in producing pulping stones for export to the Canadian lumber industry from 1915. The stones were taken by wagon down the track to Kildwick railway station then to Liverpool. In 1916 Moor Lane was setted to make transport up and down less hazardous.

The quarry also produced dimension stone and serviced projects such as rebuilding Heysham harbour as well as in local settlements and in Skipton's building boom.

It was sold in 1934 and closed in 1938 or 1939.
