Leeds Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Steel buckle plate deck supported on wrought-iron internal arch ribs of compound riveted section; cast-iron fascia arch ribs, rusticated ashlar abutments. Segmental arch with scrolled motif in spandrels, parapet with interlocking circles and moulded rail; coat of arms of Leeds at centre. On the site of the earliest dry crossing of the River Aire in Leeds. The medieval bridge, widened in 1730 and 1760, was replaced in 1873 by the present one. Designed by T. Dyne Steel and built by William Henry Barlow, better known for his completion of Brunel's Clifton suspension bridge. The iron was cast in Stanningley by John Butler. The cost exceeded £50,000 and much of the surrounding area was redeveloped at the same time.
