Castle Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Early cotton spinning mill built in 1783 and changed to worsted spinning by 1822. Built by Joseph Smith, but soon taken by a partnership between his son-in-lawDavid Illingworth, a draper in Keighley, his brother William Illingworth and William Marriner. The partners moved to Grove Mill in Keighley in 1795 when Joseph Driver, who occupied part of the mill from at least 1788 took over the whole of Castle Mill. Driver was also a partner at Askrigg Cotton Mill in Wensleydale.
In 1801 Driver insured the mill and contents for £1,350, but in 1805 he was bankrupt and the mill and machinery were for sale.
Castle Mill was taken by William Wilkinson who was running twelve frames with 52 spindles each in 1811. It was changed over to worsted spinning before 1822. Derelict in 2017.
