Upper Haugh Shaw

Description and History of Site:-
The site is now divided into two private dwellings. The right hand portion, as viewed from Haugh Shaw Lane, was a warehouse extension built for William Simpson circa 1769. The row of houses to the right of the warehouse occupy the site of the former tenter ground, and at the rear, fragments of the dressing and raising shops survive converted to garage use. The earliest reference to the site is in 1576, but it is not until the seventeenth century there is evidence of occupation by anyone specifically involved in the textile trade. Though yeoman clothier's houses are common in the Calder valley, few possess evidence of building extension for use in the textile industry during the eighteenth century or later. The three storey eastern wing of the building was erected as a warehouse about 1769 by William Simpson, for use by him in the business he conducted with William Croft and Robert Butterfield selling woollen broad cloths. Evidence of the taking in door on the upper storey is visible to the rear of the property. In 1812 the house was bought by John Whiteley, a cardmaker, and portions of the property were sub-let to different tenants. At the rear of the house, fronting Hyde Park Road, were a series of cottages, one occupied by Timothy Netherwood along with an adjacent raising shop and a dressing shop, as well as an adjoining tenter ground which he used for his cloth finishing business into the 1830s.
