Bell Hall Maltings

Description and History of Site:-
The building is one of the oldest surviving commercial malting premises in the district. The bulk of the premises are single storey, and are minus the malt kilns which were located at the Savile Park Road end where Waterloo Hall now stands. The maltings was erected by James Howorth to complement his Bell Hall Windmill (qv), but was partly re-built circa 1790; the new structure measuring forty five and a half yards by thirteen yards. For many years John Foster was tenant until he purchased the premises outright in 1870. Malting continued at the premises until at least 1881, but thereafter it was occupied by a variety of businesses and the kiln end of the premises were demolished to make way for Waterloo Hall. Tenants of the remaining portion of the premises during the twentieth century have included Walker and Throp, manufacturers of patent tram seats, John Roberts a joiner builder and contractor, and Hartley's Malleable Fittings Co. Ltd.
