Salterhebble Top Lock

Description and History of Site:-
Lock with associated lock house (qv), topmost of three in Salterhebble flight. Lock proposed by John Smeaton c 1779 and supervised by William Jessop as a replacement for part of a staircase lock of c1767 by James Brindley. Works probably executed by William Brassey appointed at that time as replacement resident engineer and completed in 1783 . The lock is constructed of large ashlar blocks with stone and later concrete copings. Handspike operated paddle gear on ground paddles and upper pair of gates, rack and pinion to lower gates.
