Built by the Sheffield Corporation, construction began in 1902, the station opened in 1904. In 1963 it had an installed capacity of 160 MW consisting of two 30 MW British Thomson-Houston and two 50 MW Metropolitan-Vickers turbine-generator sets dating from 1950. At that time the steam, at a pressure 625 psi was generated by 11 coal fired boilers using either 'chain-grates' or 'travelling grates' according to the type of boiler. The station was decommissioned in 1976.
