Stringer & Co (Sheffield) Ltd, Wincobank Steel Works / Wincro Metal Industries Ltd

Description and History of Site:-
A small-ish factory on a roughly triangular site bounded by Fife Street, Merton Lane and Barrow Road. Stringer & Company (Sheffield) Ltd. was established by John Charles Stringer in 1876. They had premises at 3 Fowler Street, later renamed Fife Street, Wincobank, Sheffield. They built a range of cars between 1913 and c1928 when they went out of business, unable to compete with the likes of Austin and Morris. The cars produced before World War 1 were known as ‘Winco’ and those after the war as both ‘Stringer-Winco’ and later 'Stringer-Smith'. It is not known how many cars were made, and none is known to exist. Wincro Metal Industries Ltd currently (2017) occupy the site, with the earlier buildings little altered.
