Description and History of Site:-
On site of Turner Wheel a 1690s cutlery grinding wheel; weir and watercourse remain (1994). Fronting Holme Lane are ashlar faced offices and two-storey brick-built workshops. To the rear is a yard and another range of workshops. At the west of the site are blue-painted corrugated-sheet clad modern workshops. Burgon & Ball were founded 1866 to make sheep shears patented by James Ball and came here in 1873. Name inscribed in stone on north elevation Burgon & Ball manufacture gardening and agricultural tools & accessories on site (2015). Between 1903 and 1906 they sold 11 cars under the name La Plata. The cars were in fact made by a currently unknown French manufacturer, using De Dion and later Aster engines, "badge engineered" as La Plata and no manufacturing was done by Burgon & Ball. Between 1904 and c1922 they also retailed other makes of cars, such as Talbot and Charron Laycock.
