Description and History of Site:-
The water tower was built, at the same time as the then new University of York chemistry department, as an assured supply for the activities of the department. It was an inverted 21 metre diameter conical tank constructed from 32 pre cast concrete 'petals' each weighing 8.5 tonne supported by a 'stem' of only 2.3 metres diameter. By 2002 it had been disused for some time and was becoming structurally unsound as the concrete deteriorated. The complex demolition is described in reference 1 below.
