Settle Workhouse

Description and History of Site:-
It is seen now as a terraced row of cottages set above and back from the road. This is a row of small cottages with a 17th-century frontage that was leased by local philanthropists, businessmen and landowners in 1759 for use as a workhouse - or 'Hospital' - to replace an earlier one, whose location is unknown. The donors leased two cottages, a barn and two gardens to be converted to use as a workhouse for initially for 21 years for an annual rent. In 1834 , by the Poor Law Act, all local workhouses were abolished in favour of new Union Workhouses - in this case the one built in Giggleswick.
