Runley Turnpike House

Description and History of Site:-
This is a classic toll house building set at the cross-roads of the turnpike road and a north-south road that forded the Ribble e route to Giggleswick and Rathmell.

It has long been a residence. The Keighley-Kendal Turnpike Act was passed in 1753 locally running from Long Preston via Runley Bridge to Settle and this was but one of the toll bars erected en route. It was not one of the original batch of toll bars but in 1833 its takings were greater than for any of the other five bars between Ingleton and Coniston Cold. All toll bars were removed in 1877.
