Liverpool House

Description and History of Site:-
This is a tall, four-storey building long since used as a residential property. In 1769 proposals were published to construct a 24km-long canal link from the Leeds-Liverpool Canal at Greenber (at SD 886 480) to the centre of Settle. What is now the car park and part of the rugby field was a natural lake/swamp - Paley's Puddle - and this was the intended canal basin. A detailed route plan - in private hands - showed the full route and the planned basin with this building allegedly built as the canal offices etc. In 1774 the plans were abandoned because of opposition from landowners through whose land it would have passed.
