Langcliffe workhouse

Description and History of Site:-
A tall but functional building used as the parish workhouse, with the caretaker's cottage attached to the rear, both built on what had been village green common land. It is now called Cock House. It was opened in 1809 and served till the Poor Law Act 1834 abolished small parish-based workhouses in favour of large Union workhouses - this one was replaced by Settle Union's. It later served as a shop, a cafe,
and a post office, but is now residential.
