Scalegill Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Probably an early corn mill with cotton spinning machinery added in 1792 and rebuilt for textile use in 1794. The first mill was insured for £200 and the machinery for £600 in 1792. The second mill with contents was insured for £850 in 1804. The mill then appears to have been enlarged and in 1809 the mill, millwork and machinery were together insured for £2,100. The mill was then four storeys high.
The mill, goit and dam can still be seen. The first mill was occupied by Roger Hartley, but was then rebuilt and offered for sale in 1795. Particulars could be obtained from Mr Sidgwick or Mr Netherwood in Skipton or Messrs Hartley & Swale in Settle. Christopher Netherwood was the leading partner. In 1810 the mill was leased to Joseph Mason. When Netherwood's sons came of age they ran the mill, but in 1820 it was sold to John Dewhirst & Co of Skipton.
The mill was advertised to rent in 1848 and in 1859 the mill was leased to John Hartley for seven years. G J Serjeantson from Hanlith Hall owned the mill. Production stopped about 1900
