British Sugar Poppleton

Description and History of Site:-
Built by the Anglo-Scottish Beet Sugar Corporation in 1926, the factory had a slicing capacity of 1,000 tons a day when it opened, and processed almost 55,000 tons of sugar beet in its first year. In 1940, operations expanded to include packaging with further improvements in 1950. In 1956, the York factory pioneered the move into bulk sugar storage with the creation of the corporation's first concrete silos: two 120ft-tall towers. Renamed the York Sugar Factory in 1962. The plant closed in 2007 and the factory demolished in 2008. The site is currently (2017) brownfield awaiting redevelopment, probably as residential housing.
