Valley Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
The present Valley Bridge which was built in 1925-28 at a cost of £170,250. It is a steel lattice girder structure on concrete piers faced with hard York stone. Consisting of four spans, two of 150 ft. and two of 152 ft., it has a total length of 604 ft. with a 40 ft. carriageway and 12 ft. footpaths. The contractors were Messrs. J. Butler and Co. Ltd. while the design was by Messrs. Coode, Fitzmaurice, Wilson and Mitchell.

The bridge replaced a toll bridge that had been erected by the Scarborough Valley Bridge Company in 1865 under the authority of a private Act of Parliament passed in the previous year. This earlier bridge had been constructed using girder that had previously formed part of a bridge over the Ouse at York. The toll bridge was purchased by the Scarborough Corporation in 1891 and continued as a toll-bridge until 1920. It was strengthened in 1911 by the addition of a new central girder, the original wooden decking being replaced by a steel and concrete deck with a wood block surface.
