Surrender Smelt Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Presently ruinous. Alongside Hard Level Gill. Two furnaces whose flues converge before ascending hillside to chimney at NY 988 003. Four doorways in front facade and some windows. Monolithic stone lintels to exterior of windows wooden lintels to interior. Remains of a fuel store behind. The present structures in coursed rubble date from 1839, but were built on the site of earlier mills. Originally, the flue and chimney were 470m long, but the flue was extended, some time after 1854, a new chimney built, and the site of the original chimney converted to a condenser.

There was a central wheelhouse with two ore hearths at each end and a roasting hearth added on the north-east corner.
