Former Ragged School

Description and History of Site:-
The Lambeth Ragged School in Newport Street was built by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, FRS in 1851 as a memorial to his wife at a cost of £10,000.

Initially the school was known as the Beaufoy Ragged School and later as the Beaufoy Institute.

This remaining fragment was left when most of building was demolished in 1902 for widening of railway viaduct by L&SWR.

The school was rebuilt at 39 Black Prince Road (qv) in 1909. Now the Beaconsfield Art Gallery. Reputed to have been the school Charlie Chaplin attended.
