Kilnsea Acoustic or Sound Mirror

Description and History of Site:-
Concrete acoustical mirror built in 1916 as part of the WW1 air defence network. One of a number of similar listening stations constructed along the coast of NE England to provide early warning of aerial attack. Interestingly, this technology was still current until the 1930's when a system of rather larger acoustic early warning stations were being developed around the Thames Estuary. These ceased to be relevant once radar was shown to be effective (around 1936) and their further development cancelled.
