Mark Weighton Canal Tidal Lock

Description and History of Site:-
Constructed under an Act of 1772. The Market Weighton canal sought to provide a navigation and a drainage channel, uses which were difficult to reconcile. The fine masonry lock at the entrance was opened in 1776 and was built by either John Smith or his successor Grundy. Virtually in its original condition it has to combine the function of tidal lock and sluice.
